By the time he signed a solo recording contract with MCA Records in 1969, Tony Christie had acquired vocal mannerisms similar to those of Tom Jones.
This attracted the interest of songwriters Mitch Murray and Peter Callander, who provided Christie with his first UK Top 30 entry in late 1970/early 1971 with “Las Vegas”. Later, the million-selling “(Is This The Way To) Amarillo” topped charts throughout Europe although only breaking into the Top 20 in the UK.
