Book John W. Morgan
(and Colonel Willie Hunter-Downe)
John Morgan was born in Glasgow in 1946. When he was three, the family moved to Greenock where he was educated at Greenock Academy. In the year he finished school the Morgans moved to Bridge of Allan, where he has lived ever since.
He describes the process as ”Glasgow born, Greenock bred, Bridge of Allan refined!”
John is married to Morag and has two grown up daughters – Megan and Erika. He enjoys writing, watching football, going to movies, speaking and studying the life and works of Robert Burns.
He and Morag own an internet company selling chess sets, paintings and gifts. He has served on the Board of Scottish Enterprise, Forth Valley and is also a Board member of the Entrepreneurial Exchange.
Clubs/Sports Dinners etc.
John has rapidly built his reputation as one of the most entertaining speakers on the after-dinner circuit, using a wide variety of oratory and writing skills to suit almost any occasion and audience.
He is utterly adaptable and while his humour is suitable for even the most delicate of mixed audiences, he is equally at home with a more “adult” content, suitable for predominantly male-only events.
Business Speaking
John has spoken at and chaired many business dinners and events. He regularly presents award ceremonies for local enterprise companies and other business organisations.
His wide mix of experience of chairing, presenting and talking make him adaptable to any business occasion.
Robert Burns
John has a particular passion for the works and life of Scotland’s bard. He chairs a number of Burns Clubs and Suppers annually and can deliver The Immortal Memory and Toast to the Lassies. He also has an impressive repertoire of Burns recitations including:
- The Address to the Haggis which he can precede with his own “Glesga” version
- Tam o’ Shanter and Tam o’ Punter (his own Govan parody),
- Holy Willie’s Prayer,
- To a Mouse,
- The Cotters’ Saturday Night,
- The Twa Dogs etc.
In reality, he can do almost an entire Burns Supper - except for the piping and singing!
Colonel Willie Hunter-Downe
John’s hilarious alter ego was first created in 2001 to “host” a charity clay pigeon event. Since then, the Colonel has gone on to speak at major industry and company events.
The dead pan, rather “posh” presentation of the Colonel, mixes his “experiences” through his military career and running the family business (farming, shooting etc.), with his supposed experience within the industry/ profession relating to the dinner or event.
Add to that mix his biting humour and you have an utterly hilarious and quite memorable experience.
John appears and talks as the Colonel supported by a CV carefully written to have empathy with the event profile. He invariably arrives, mixes with the top table guests, speaks and leaves without ever once lifting the veil of the Colonel.
PS: The Colonel also does Burns Suppers!
Business Career
John started in advertising in 1964 as an office boy and then trained as a commercial artist. Having noticed that there weren’t too many old commercial artists around, he decided to move on to the account management side of advertising where he has been ever since.
In a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time, he became Managing Director of his first advertising agency at the age of 23. Seven years later he joined Woolward Royds - then Scotland’s largest advertising agency - as Managing Director of their Glasgow company. In 1980 he started his own Agency, Morgan Associates, which was later to become The Morgan Partnership.
John’s company, Merle (named after the old Scots word for Blackbird) was formed in December 2001 and now handles the marketing and advertising for a diverse range of clients including Highland Spring, Robert Wiseman Dairies, Dobbies Garden Centres, Arran Aromatics, Tyreplus (part of the Kwik-Fit Group), The Whisky Shop and Tunnock’s.
