One of the most experienced and sought after comedy writers in the country. Started off writing for Naked Radio, A Kick Up the Eighties, Not the Nine O’Clock News and Spitting Image before joining BBC Scotland’s Comedy Unit, the department responsible for producing the likes of Naked Video, Rab C. Nesbitt, Scotch and Wry, City Lights and, the show Phil is best known for, Only An Excuse?
After leaving the BBC to form an independent production company, The Comedy Unit then went on to chalk up even more success with Chewin’ the Fat, Still Game, The Karen Dunbar Show, Offside and Watson’s Wind Up.
As well as continuing to write, produce and direct for television, radio and theatre, Phil is also a regular on Scotland’s thriving stand-up comedy circuit as well as a popular speaker at Sportsman’s dinners and Burns Suppers.
In the past five years Phil has been a columnist with The Daily Star, The Scottish Mirror and The Daily Record. Currently writes a weekly column for the Evening Times while continuing to contribute articles on a regular basis to The Sunday Mail, Daily Record and Sunday Herald. Was media columnist in the now sadly departed Business AM.
He also appears irregularly on the after dinner circuit either as a speaker or host of ‘Question and Answer Sessions’ with Tam Cowan.
In 2005, Philip fulfilled a life ambition and turned to stand up comedy. Differ is now a regular on the Scottish stand up circuit appearing at venues across the country.
