Beats of
Brazil

Carnival beats from the streets of Brazil
Beats of Brazil
are a performance percussion group. Playing various
Brazilian grooves, from the fast, energetic rhythms of
the world famous Rio Carnival to the infectious laid
back Samba Reggae beats of Salvador.... and much more!!!
Formed in 2002 by John Dirkie, who started drumming at
the age of 12 in Scottish Pipe Bands and then various
other rock groups until he was introduced to the world
of Brazilian Samba in the late nineties.
He then went on a tour round the world in 2001, where he
met with Master Drummer Carlos Ferreira, a Brazilian now
living in Australia. Amazed with Carlos’s talent, John
spent a year training with him, learning how to produce
the REAL sound of true Brazilian percussion with the
correct ‘swing’. Then after a spending a month
researching in Brazil, returned to Scotland and set up
the Beats of Brazil group as a vehicle to promote this
exciting, energetic form of world music through
performances and workshops...
Over the last 4 years the band have performed all over
the country at various festivals, carnivals, club nights
and events of every kind, and with John just back from
his latest 5 month trip to Brazil, where he has been
training and performing with world class percussionists
and playing in Carnivals in both Rio de Janeiro and
Salvador, Brazil, this year looks set to see the bands
hottest performances yet!!!!
