Acker Bilk and the Paramount Jazz Band

Acker BilkSeven years ago Acker was honoured with an MBE for his services to the Music Industry, well deserved, we feel, and maybe a little over due. January 2004 saw Acker's "arrival" in Who's Who, although Acker and I are not sure what this exactly signifies!

In 2005 Acker was awarded, firstly, the BBC Jazz Awards for his unique contribution to Jazz in UK, and secondly, Acker accepted an Honorary Master of Arts Degree from the University of Bristol'. It certainly shows how far Acker has come since his humble birth in Pensford, Somerset on 28 January 1929: his actual names are Bernard Stanley were short-lived as he was soon called Acker by all, this being Somerset for friend or mate, and if you meet Acker you will agree this name is apt, his warmth of character and wicked humour makes him friend to all.

His youth was spent in Somerset where his parents tried to teach Acker the piano, but the practising restricted him from being in the countryside, playing football or even a little poaching ! Acker lost two front teeth in a school punch-up, and half a finger in a sledging accident, and this he claims is the reason for his recognisable style of clarinet playing.

Dionne Warwick

Book Dionne WarwickDionne Warwick has, over an illustrious four-decade career, established herself as an international musical legend. Her reputation as a hit maker has been firmly etched into public consciousness, thanks to nearly sixty charted hits since "Don't Make Me Over" began its climb up the charts in December 1962.

As a performer, she has charmed and entertained audiences on every continent, amassing a worldwide audience. There are a few important "firsts" that make Dionne Warwick a true pioneer.

Dionne Warwick received her first Grammy Award in 1968 (for the classic "Do You Know The Way to San Jose?"), and in so doing became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance. This award has only been awarded to one other female African-American legend, Ella Fitzgerald.

Her recordings of songs like "A House Is Not A home," "Alfie," "(Theme From) The Valley Of The Dolls," and "The April Fools" made Dionne Warwick a pioneer as one of the first female artists to popularise classic movie themes. In 1968 Dionne made her own film debut in the movie "Slaves". This marked the first time, since Lena Horne, that a contemporary African-American female recording artist achieved such a goal.

Their song writing talent resulted in a succession of international hit records for The Four Tops, Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan, Wilson Pickett, George Benson, Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle and Bobby Womack.

Having laid their foundation as successful songwriters Womack & Womack debuted as artists in their own right in the mid-1980's with the global smash hit single "Love Wars". Their most successful period as artists came in the late 1980's with the album 'Conscience', which resulted in 4 hit singles (including global top ten smash "Teardrops"), went gold in 10 countries and platinum in 3.

Gerry & The Pacemakers

Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the PacemakersIn 1962 Gerry and the Pacemakers were signed by manager Brian Epstein as his second group after the Beatles, and made their name with ballads like 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' and 'Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying' as well as raunchy pop. But it was a Rodgers & Hammerstein song, 'You'll Never Walk Alone', which had enthralled Marsden since he saw the film Carousel in his youth, that was their biggest hit.

For three decades it has remained the anthem of the crowds at Liverpool Football Club, played before kick-off every Saturday, inscribed on the club gates and always the most popular concert request.

Gerry Marsden is a driven man, an artist with enormous confidence and a unique spirit. From his streetwise boyhood and early love of music to his friendship - and keen rivalry - with the Beatles, hunger for fame and hard-won success, his story is one of grit, warmth, humor and determination.
